TREK TO CHANDERNAAN LAKE
Chandernaaan lake is situated in between beautiful snowy mountains at an elevation of 4,000 meters(approximately)from sea level in the Pabbar Valley. To reach Chandernahan lake you first need to reach Rohru which is at a distance of 120 Kms from Shimla. From Rohru there is a road which takes you to village Tangnu & village Janglikh. These villages are also good to see if you are interested in knowing the actual traditional culture of Himachal Pradesh. From the village Tangnu it is an eight hour trek Chandernaan lake with a stop at Litham Thach The word “Thach” means meadow.
Chandarnahan valley is located in Upper Shimla region of Himachal Pradesh. Pabbar river originates from Chandarnahan lakes valley. There are 7 glacial ponds in Chandarnahan valley.
Visited in the month of March and aug,2018 and I really like this trek. Starts from Janghlik village, last village located in pabbar valley. It's a moderate trek to reach the Chandarnahan lakes. I opt for 4 days trek from Janghlik till Janghlik to see the Chandarnahan lake. I take the assistance of a local guide and support team from Janghlik village for the trek as we are the group of 12 people.
The trek to Chandarnahan lakes crosses from village, forests and Meadows. En-route we see many beautiful Meadows of simir thach, dayara thach, mounty thach and litham thach. Till litham the trek is moderate, from litham it's a steep climb of 1.5 hrs to reach the top of Chandarnahan waterfalls. From there go deeper inside the valley to visit beautiful glacial lakes.
Below is our brief itinerary of trek:-
- Shimla to Janghlik
- Janghlik to dayara thach(camps)
- dayara thach to litham thach
- litham thach to Chandarnahan lakes and back to mounty thach 1 hr ahead of litham thach.
- mounty thach to Janghlik village and then Shimla by cab.Chandarnahan is a beautiful valley full of Meadows, lakes and flowers. Must visit if you visit that region. Also the hospitality of the people's of Janghlik was great.
Our guide is the most amazing person, kind, warm hearted, accommodating, helpful , learned man. He made our trip fantastic.
Billu Negi, our guide, arranged ponies, horse man, cook, kitchen tent, dining tent, even a toilet tent, and of course tents for us four, fresh sleeping bags, inflatable carry mats. We would begin our trek early each morning, leaving the cook and the horseman to wind up everything. Felt sad about it but there was not much option. Yet within two or three hours, they would catch up, overtake us, and set up the base in the next camp. Be ready with something hot, like paneer pakodas or fries or soup or kichadi.
Not trekking afternoon is a good rule our guide follows in the Himalayas. Rains, sudden change in weather all generally happens after 1 pm.
So early rising, early trek, early camping helped us explore the camp site surrounding so much better.
At times we even played Frisbee. Playing and thus breathing deep helps in high altitudes. Ensuring better protection agnst H. I. S
The camping sites at Mulling, Kara, Furtsaling are amazing. Especially mulling. In one view one can see bright white glaciers, waterfalls, steep mountain slopes, forest, pine trees, green pastures, bubbling icy river. This view from the tent as one peeps out.
Not another human in sight, no villages, no signs of civilization, no electricity. Just one with the nature in its simplest truest forms.
Yet fancy food by the cook, pasta, paranthas, rice, dal, sabjis, fried stuff, biscuits, chocolates, energy bars, dry fruits. Our guide took care of everything.
The treks are very easy, very mild, with very few steep stretches. Many many unpolluted fresh water springs are almost every half hour helped us keep hydrated. Ofcourse one could carry bottled ro water but why have that in the pure hills of Himalayas?
Flexibility is amazing so one can have the trek tailor made to suit any number of days.
To get the full experience, I would suggest people to go on a trek to Bhaba.Lush green, plains, mountains and my favourite water streams. Our trek was from a place called Kafnu and ended on the Pin valley side. You can't get a better view of Himachal than this. Make sure you are rain equipped because it happens a lot and we were lucky to experience mild hail too !!
